History of Colombo
The capital city is located on the west coast of the island. Known from ancient age as a busy sea port on the East West trade route has been influencing the trade of the country in a great way. The city became the capital in the year 1815 and with the shifting of the administrative base to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte; Colombo came to be known as the commercial hub of Sri Lanka.
